Heavy upper eyelids are one of the most common reasons patients in Boise and Meridian schedule a facial cosmetic consultation. Many people assume they need eyelid surgery, but the cause is not always the eyelid itself. Sometimes the brow has descended over time and is pushing skin down onto the lid. Understanding the difference helps you choose the procedure that will actually give you the result you want.
What an Eyelid Lift Treats
An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, removes or repositions excess skin, fat, and muscle around the eyes. Upper blepharoplasty addresses hooded or heavy upper lids, and the incision is hidden in the natural eyelid crease. Lower blepharoplasty treats under-eye bags and puffiness.
An eyelid lift is often the right choice if:
- Your brows sit at a natural height, but your upper lids have extra folds of skin
- Excess skin rests on your lashes or makes applying makeup difficult
- You have puffy bags under your eyes that make you look tired
What a Brow Lift Treats
A brow and forehead lift raises low or heavy brows and smooths horizontal forehead lines and frown lines. When the brow drops, it can crowd the upper eyelid and create a hooded look, even if the eyelid skin itself is not excessive.
A brow lift may be the better option if:
- Your brows sit at or below the bony brow ridge
- You often raise your eyebrows to see better or to look more awake
- You have deep forehead creases along with heavy lids
A Simple Mirror Test
Look in a mirror and gently lift your brows with your fingertips to where you would like them to sit. If most of the heaviness on your eyelids disappears, a drooping brow is likely contributing. If you still see a fold of excess skin on the upper lid, an eyelid lift may be needed, either alone or with a brow lift. This test is only a starting point, and an in-person exam is the best way to know for sure.
Combining Both Procedures
Many patients benefit from both procedures performed together. Raising the brow first and then removing only the eyelid skin that remains helps avoid removing too much skin and keeps results natural. Your surgeon will plan the combination that fits your anatomy.
